Martynas Mažvydas Pedestrian Alley in Klaipėda

The alley was established in 1968 as the very first pedestrian street in Klaipėda. It is named in honor of Martynas Mažvydas, the author of the first printed Lithuanian book. The avenue serves as a vibrant urban axis connecting the central part of the city with the historic Klaipėda Sculpture Park.

A significant transformation occurred during a major reconstruction in the summer of 2008, led by architect V. Paulionis. The alley was upgraded with modern clinker and granite paving, contemporary lighting, and its most famous feature—artistic benches.

These granite benches have been turned into open-air mini art installations. Over the years, various Lithuanian sculptors and organizations have adorned them with whimsical bronze and stone sculptures, including themes like "The Cat", "Chess", "Tic-Tac-Toe", and "Lightning". The fish sculpture featured in the foreground highlights Klaipėda's maritime heritage and identity as a port city.
