Daugava Museum
The Daugava Museum is the only museum in the Baltic States dedicated entirely to the history of a river. Located on the scenic Dole Island in Salaspils Municipality, it offers a comprehensive insight into the cultural history of Latvia's river of destiny – the Daugava – as well as its coastal inhabitants and the surrounding region.
History
The museum was founded in 1969 as the Dole History Museum. Its creation was primarily prompted by the planning and construction of the Rīga Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP). Prior to the flooding of vast areas, archaeologists conducted extensive excavations, uncovering unique historical artifacts. The museum opened to the public in 1977 and was renamed the Daugava Museum in 1993. Since 1996, it has operated under the authority of the Salaspils Municipality.
Architecture
The museum is housed in the new manor house of the historical Dole Manor complex, built in 1898. The building features an Eclectic architectural style, showcasing the decorative red-brick finish (the so-called "brick style") popular at the turn of the 20th century. The manor house is surrounded by a picturesque landscape park that stretches down to the steep banks of the Daugava River.
Contemporary Function
Today, the museum focuses on preserving historical heritage, conducting research, and educating the public. The indoor space features a modern, interactive exhibition designed to mimic the winding curves of the river, guiding visitors from the first Stone Age settlements to the modern HPP cascade. The museum grounds regularly host open-air concerts, seasonal celebrations, and the international Museum Night, while also providing picnic areas and venue rentals.
