Stone sculpture
The granite memorial ensemble stands on a gently sloping hillside in lush spring greenery, overlooking a wide river. The composition consists of several massive granite blocks, each carved and engraved with traditional Latvian folk ornament motifs — geometric patterns incised into both light grey and dark polished stone surfaces. Atop several of the sculptures, small raised figures are visible, lending the ensemble a ceremonial quality. In the background, the calm river stretches across the frame, with the far bank and tree-lined horizon completing a serene natural setting of birches, pines, and lilacs in full bloom.
The memorial ensemble is dedicated to the memory of the flooded homes of Doles Island — settlements lost when the Riga Hydroelectric Power Station reservoir was created. The carved surfaces feature Latvian folk pattern elements that symbolize the lost homeland and cultural heritage of the displaced communities. The permanence and solidity of stone form a powerful visual contrast with the theme of loss and disappearance. Each stone is unique — some retain their natural, rough-hewn texture, while others have been carefully polished and refined.
Taken as a whole, the ensemble represents a harmonious union of nature and sculpture, with the granite forms integrating organically into the park-like landscape. The surroundings are well-maintained: gravel paths frame the sculptures, while the nearby lawn and flowering shrubs give the site a calm and dignified atmosphere. Positioned beside the water, the memorial carries additional symbolic weight — the river itself bearing silent witness to what once lay beneath its surface.
