Dole Island
Dole Island (Doles sala) is the largest island in the lower reaches of the Daugava River, located in the Salaspils Municipality. It is a unique natural and cultural-historical territory, most of which is designated as a nature park. Following the construction of the Rīga Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), the island was partially flooded and its shape altered, yet it remains an area of high ecological and historical value.
History
Dole Island is one of the oldest and most thoroughly excavated settlement sites in Latvia, inhabited since the Stone and Bronze Ages. In the earliest written records, it was referred to as the King's Island (insula regis). The name "Dole" originates from the 13th-century Lord of the Vecdole Castle, Dolen. Historically, the island held a strategic position near the rapids of the Daugava. The most drastic changes occurred between 1966 and 1974, when the construction of the Rīga HPP reservoir flooded nearly half of the island's historical territory, including numerous archaeological sites.
Architecture
The surviving architectural heritage on the island spans several centuries:
-
Vecdoles Castle Ruins: The remains of a early 13th-century stone castle built from local dolomite. Its defensive wall is considered one of the oldest surviving examples of masonry work in Latvia.
-
Dole Manor Complex: The centerpiece is the new manor house built in 1898 in the Eclectic style, featuring a decorative red-brick facade. The complex is enveloped by a historical landscape park.
-
Sacred and Military Architecture: The island features the Solāži Skansts – an early 19th-century earthen fortification from the Napoleonic Wars era, as well as historical family burial grounds.
Contemporary Function
Since 1987, a 1,044-hectare territory on the island has been designated as the Dole Island Nature Park, which is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. Today, its primary functions are biodiversity conservation and recreation. The island is a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, and birdwatchers. The Dole Manor house accommodates the Daugava Museum, which serves as the main cultural and public hub of the island.
Interesting Facts
-
Before the construction of the Rīga HPP, Dole Island was approximately 9 km long and 3.5 km wide; today, its length has decreased to about 5.2 km.
-
The ancestral roots of Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, the former President of Latvia, trace back to the island's historical "Vīķi" homestead, which now lies submerged beneath the reservoir.
-
The western coast of the island features a protected geological natural monument – the Dole Island dolomite outcrop, which rises up to 2.5 meters high.
