Granite sculpture "Cat" (Katinas)
Among the numerous modern open-air artworks in the Klaipėda Sculpture Park, Lithuania, stands one of its most recognizable and beloved pieces—the granite sculpture titled "Cat" (Katinas). Crafted in 1983 by the prominent Lithuanian sculptor Vytautas Narutis, this piece remains a striking example of modern decorative tēlniecība.
Sculpted from reddish-brown granite, the artwork immediately commands attention with its rigid, laconic, and geometric silhouette. Narutis was deeply inspired by the forms of Ancient Egyptian sculpture, where the cat was revered as a sacred deity. The animal’s body is heavily stylized, morphed into a solid, pyramidal base that seamlessly tapers up into an expressive head characterized by sharp ears and almond-shaped eyes.
The "Cat" beautifully demonstrates how the monumental calm of ancient historical heritages can be merged with late 20th-century modernist aesthetics, making it a timeless highlights of Klaipėda's public art spaces.
