Klaipėda Sculpture Park (Klaipėdos skulptūrų parkas) is one of the most intriguing and visually captivating cultural landmarks in Lithuania. Spanning roughly 10 hectares in the heart of the city, this green sanctuary functions as an open-air gallery where nature, mature modernist sculpture, and poignant layers of history live in harmony.
From a Central Cemetery to an Art Oasis
The park’s grounds carry a dramatic and deeply moving past. From 1820 to 1959, this area served as the central cemetery of Memel (Klaipėda), holding the remains of over 40,000 residents. Vandalized and neglected during the Soviet era, the territory took on a completely new purpose starting in 1977.
Through a series of summer symposia held between 1977 and 1991, Lithuanian artists carved and installed 116 granite sculptures, transforming the park into a premier repository of late modernist Lithuanian art. Today, it functions as both an art park and a historical memorial, preserving significant heritage sites such as the graves of the 1923 Klaipėda Revolt rebels and monuments dedicated to those lost at sea.
Visual Identity and Modern Accents
At the entrance, visitors are greeted by two elegant white columns topped with decorative stone spheres, leading into a well-manicured, shaded path. Positioned further down the alley's axis is the granite sculpture "The Procession" ("Eisena"), created by sculptor Algirdas Bosas in 1983, which stands beautifully against the lush canopy of mature trees. Following recent major renovations, the park has become incredibly accessible and family-friendly. A fantastic new feature includes the "talking sculptures"—25 selected artworks now have integrated QR codes, allowing visitors to scan them and listen to immersive audio stories in either Lithuanian or English.
