Bas-Relief Depicting a Medieval Book-Printing Scene on the Marijampolė Monument

The bas-relief is carved into a pink granite panel, framed by an arched border patterned like brickwork. At the centre of the composition, three male figures stand around a wooden table – on the left a young man in a rounded cap holds an object in his hands, in the centre a bearded man in a cap holds open pages of a book, and on the right a man leans over the table, working on a sheet of paper.

Several books with carved lines of lettering rest on the table, and behind the central figure stands a vertical cross-shaped object on a stand. In the lower right corner, at the foot of the table, a small dog figure lies carved into the stone, adding a homely touch to the scene.

The relief forms part of a larger granite-and-steel monument dedicated to language and nation, and this particular scene depicts the early age of book printing – a symbolic reference to the creation of the first book printed in the Lithuanian language.
