Teodors Spāde Environmental Object in Ventspils

Support the redzet.lv project

This environmental art object is dedicated to Teodors Spāde (1891–1970), the first admiral in the history of the Latvian Armed Forces and Commander of the Latvian Navy. The sculpture ensemble is located at the beginning of the Ostas Street Promenade in Ventspils, near the ferry terminal. It was officially unveiled in July 2026.

Design & Architecture

Designed by sculptor Kristaps Gulbis and architect Raimonds Saulītis, the composition covers a paved platform alongside a landscaped dune area:

Stainless Steel Boats: The focal point consists of eight stainless steel origami-style paper boats of varying sizes, symbolizing dreams, movement, and the journey toward one's goals.

Sculpture of a Boy: Seated on the bow of the largest boat is a figure of a young boy, representing Spāde's childhood in Ventspils and his early aspirations of sailing the seas.

Base & Information: The sculptures rest on a polished concrete base accompanied by informative text detailing Admiral Spāde's life and historical contribution to Latvia.

Historical Significance

Born into a fisherman's family in Ventspils, Teodors Spāde rose to become Latvia's first naval admiral in 1938. The artwork serves both as an educational memorial and a visual accent on the Ventspils promenade.
