Brief History
The history of the site dates back to 1758 when a wooden church was consecrated by the Marian Fathers, who were invited by Pranciška Butlerienė, the elder of Prienai. After the original wooden structure was destroyed by fire in 1809, construction of a stone church began. The new church was completed and consecrated in 1824 under the title of Saint Michael the Archangel. It underwent significant expansions in the late 19th century. In 1992, Pope John Paul II granted the church the status of a Minor Basilica.
Architecture
The basilica features a combination of Classicist and Neo-Baroque architectural elements. It is built on a Latin cross floor plan with three naves, an apse, and two prominent front towers.
Current Function
Today, it serves as an active parish church within the Diocese of Vilkaviškis and acts as a major pilgrimage site in Lithuania, hosting daily Holy Masses and religious events.

Relics of Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis: The basilica houses the side chapel containing the tomb and relics of Blessed Archbishop Jurgis Matulaitis.

Historic Burial Ground: The churchyard contains graves of Marian monks as well as insurgents from the 1831 Uprising.
