Zund (Riga)

The Zund or Zund Canal is a tributary of the Daugava River between Kipsala and its left bank, beginning at the Gulf of Agenskalns and ending in the Daugava at Podrags . The Sound is approximately 3 km long, 50-200 m wide and 3 m deep. The Shroud Bridge and several smaller bridges were built across the Zund There were several large factories on the left bank of the Sound earlier.

The name of the head of the Zund between the former Peldu Island and the bank of the Daugava is Āzene , its width is 40-50 m and it is crossed by two bridges connecting Āgenskalns and Ķīpsala. In 2019, the Riga City Council decided to close a pedestrian bridge across the Zunda Canal at the end of Mazā Ūdens Street .

History
Earlier, when the Daugava River was ice-clogged, water from the Daugava between the small Klīversala, the Carrot Island and Kipsala flooded into the Zunda. In the 17th century, 65-75% of all ships entered Riga via the Zund. 1764 - 1784 Engineer Gustav von Emmanuel Veismanis of Klīversala to Podraga built Stranded dam , was one in a series of six connected islands: Biekensala, Mūkusala , Great Kliversala , Carrot Island , Little Centrs and Kipsala , šķērsattekas between islands filled. Perpendicular to this was built the Agenskalns, High or Tortler Dam, which was designed to protect the hemp warehouses on the Carrot Island from the spring ice.

In the floods of 1785 or 1786 ice broke the newly built dam between Great Cleveland and Carrot Island. In 1807 and 1814 the rupture widened and formed Agenskalns Bay, which flows into Mārupīte . The river was berthed and one boat route passed through the Zund.
