Vilce castle mound

Vilce castle mound is located in Jelgava district, In Vilce parish, less than one kilometer to West from Vilce in the former Vilce manor park. In 1959 and 1966 the castle mound was surveyed by Ē.Mugurēvičs and M.Atgāzis, who found a cultural layer in the monument and found several antiques, thus obtaining evidence that this ancient site would be considered a real castle mound.

The Vilce mound, which is overgrown with trees, is located in the steep corner of the River Vilce and the River Rukuze. The plateau of the castle mound is surrounded by a 30 m long and 2 m high semicircle with a ditch 1.5-2 m in front. The mound of the castle mound is only 10 x 5 m large, because most of it is washed by the River Vilce. From the castle mound to the South outside the fortifications there is a larger leveled area where there could have been a place for the foreground. The ceramic scrub and the rubbing stone found in the castle mound allow the mound to be attributed to the average Iron Age.

From the Vilce castle mound you can see uncovering sandstone outcrops of Rūkūze river.
