The Stone Jetty of Pape Canal
The stone jetty of the Pape Canal is a key hydrotechnical structure in the Pape Nature Park, located directly at the point where the canal meets the Baltic Sea. This massive structure serves as the primary shield for maintaining the canal's functionality.
Primary Functions:
- Protection against Siltation: The main task of the jetty is to protect the canal's mouth from sand deposits brought in by sea currents and waves.
- Prevention of Erosion: It prevents the erosion of the canal bed and the coastline in the immediate vicinity of the canal.
- Hydrological Stability: The jetty ensures stable water exchange between Lake Pape and the sea, helping to regulate the lake's water level.
A major restoration of the Pape Canal was completed in 2020, which included strengthening the technical condition of the jetty to provide long-term protection against coastal erosion. While the historical wooden piers are located further north, it is the stone jetty that currently performs the active engineering role in protecting the canal entrance.
