Letters to the City: The Unique "Old Town Post" of Klaipėda

Klaipėda is a city filled with a distinct coastal charm, where miniature bronze wonders wait to be discovered around almost every corner. While most tourists search for the famous "Magical Mouse" or the "Klaipėda Resident" cat, a highly unique art installation catches the eye at the intersection of Tiltų and Turgaus streets – the sculpture "Senamiesčio paštas" (Old Town Post).

Created by the well-known sculptor Klaudijus Pūdymas and architect Mindaugas Zabarauskas, this original bronze piece was unveiled in 2009. The idea was brought to life by the Old Town Business Association of Klaipėda as a creative gift to the city and its community.

The centerpiece of the sculpture is a large, stylized envelope decorated with the official coat of arms of Klaipėda, with two carrier pigeons perched cozily on top. However, this artwork is much more than just a beautiful street decoration. It serves a practical purpose as a fully functioning mailbox. Travelers and locals alike are invited to drop in letters containing thoughts, creative ideas, or wishes on how to improve the Old Town area. While it bypasses the standard postal system, the letters are collected by local community members to directly gather public feedback and continuous inspiration.
