Salantai Town Park

Salantai Town Park (Salantų miesto parkas) is one of the most distinctive green spaces in the centre of Salantai, a small town in the Kretinga District of western Lithuania. The park lies on the scenic bank of the Salantas River and stretches out below the town’s church, creating a peaceful landscape where nature and architecture blend into a memorable view.

Historically, this area is not just a modern public park — it used to be part of the Salantai Manor Park. Sources suggest that its origins may be linked to 17th-century orchards established by the noble Vainai family, which later evolved into a landscaped park environment. Remnants of that past can still be found today, as the cellars of the former manor palace have survived in the south-eastern part of the park, offering a subtle yet powerful reminder of the site’s historic roots.

The park is valued for its dendrological collection and biodiversity, forming a cohesive natural complex within the town. Covering approximately 8.4–8.5 hectares, it includes a mix of naturally growing native trees — such as maples, lindens, oaks and birches — as well as spruces and other planted species, many of which were introduced in the 20th century.

Today, Salantai Town Park is appreciated as a calm walking and relaxation area, while also functioning as part of a wider sightseeing experience in Salantai. It is a place where visitors can slow down, enjoy the river landscape, and feel the character of Samogitia through a setting shaped by nature, local history, and long-standing cultural memory.
