Plateliai Town, Lithuania
Plateliai is a small yet historically rich town in the Samogitia (Žemaitija) region of northwestern Lithuania, located in the Plungė District. It lies on the western shore of Lake Plateliai, which is widely recognized as the largest lake in Samogitia and one of the most iconic natural landmarks of the region. Despite its modest size, Plateliai is a destination where nature, heritage, and local traditions come together in a distinctly Lithuanian rural landscape.
Historical sources mention Plateliai as early as the 15th century. At that time, the manor, settlement, and church were situated on the Šventorkalnis peninsula, but by the end of the 17th century they were moved to the town’s present location. Over time, Plateliai gained administrative and symbolic importance: in 1792 it was granted Magdeburg rights and received its own coat of arms, marking its place among notable historical settlements of the region.
Today, Plateliai is best known as the administrative center of Žemaitija National Park and as a popular resort area in Samogitia. Visitors come here for a calm, scenic atmosphere, surrounded by forests and rolling hills, while still finding plenty to do—especially during warmer seasons. The town functions as a gateway into the national park, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the area’s trails, lakeside landscapes, and countryside heritage.
A defining feature of Plateliai is, without doubt, Lake Plateliai itself. The lake covers roughly 1,205 hectares, reaches a maximum depth of about 50 meters, and contains seven islands, including the so-called Castle Island. It is valued not only as a recreational attraction, but also for its natural and landscape significance within Žemaitija National Park.
Plateliai also retains a strong cultural identity through its historic architecture and village-like charm—offering travelers a chance to experience a quieter, more authentic side of Lithuania. Whether you come for the lake views, the national park surroundings, or the layered history that stretches back centuries, Plateliai stands out as one of Samogitia’s most memorable destinations.
