Palanga Amber Museum

The Palanga Amber Museum (Palangos gintaro muziejus) is one of Lithuania's most significant cultural landmarks. It is housed in the magnificent Neo-Renaissance palace of Count Feliksas Tiškevičius, built in 1897 by the German architect Franz Schwechten. The museum is set within the sprawling Birutė Park, a botanical masterpiece designed by the renowned French landscape architect Édouard André.

Highlights of the Museum:

  • Vast Collection: The museum preserves over 30,000 amber pieces, with approximately 4,500 objects on public display across 15 exhibition rooms.
  • Windows to the Past: It boasts one of the world's largest collections of amber inclusions—ancient insects, spiders, and plants frozen in time within prehistoric tree resin.
  • The Sun Stone: A must-see is the legendary "Sun Stone" (Saulės akmuo), weighing a massive 3.5 kilograms, making it one of the largest amber specimens in Europe.
  • Aristocratic Splendor: The restored ground-floor interiors offer a glimpse into the 19th-century noble life of the Tiškevičius family, blending history with artistic elegance.
