Nature Park "Doles sala"
The Nature Park "Doles sala" (Dole Island) is located in the Salaspils municipality and covers most of the island (1044 hectares), excluding the area occupied by the Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) structures and its reservoir dam. It is a protected nature territory of European importance (Natura 2000).
Brief History
The nature park was established in 1987. Its primary objective was to preserve the unique landscape, cultural heritage, and natural values of the unflooded part of Dole Island. These areas remained intact after the construction of the Riga HPP and the subsequent flooding of the surrounding valley in the 1970s. Historically, the island served as a strategic point on the lower Daugava River, hosting ancient settlements and fortifications.
Modern Function
The park balances nature conservation with public recreation and environmental education. The central area features pine forests, while the terraces consist of meadows and fields harboring rare, protected flora and nesting bird species. The park offers developed walking trails. The most prominent attraction within the park is the Daugava Museum, which serves as the local cultural and historical hub.
