Monument to Vytautas the Great
The monument to Vytautas the Great in Marijampolė.
- Located in Vytautas the Great Park in Marijampolė, Lithuania.
- Carved from granite, about 9 metres tall, consisting of a tall pedestal decorated with reliefs and inscriptions, topped by the equestrian figure.
- Sculptor: Julius Narušis; architect: Vida Naumavičienė.
- Unveiled on 22 May 2010, following the reconstruction of the park.
- The idea dates back to 1930, when the 500th anniversary of Vytautas's death was marked, but the monument could not be built at the time due to the outbreak of war. The modern initiative was revived by the Marijampolė "Vytautai" Club, which began fundraising in 2003.
- The front side of the monument bears an inscription commemorating the Battle of Grunwald (Žalgiris), 15 July 1410, and the 1422 Treaty of Melno, which refers to the land of Sūduva.
