Monument to Air Force Assistants in Riga
At the end of World War II, 3514 young people were summoned in German Army Air Force assistants. One part came to the 1st German Air Navy Air Force Assistant Training Battalion. The Kazarmas were built at Mazā Nometņu Street 16, in the premises of the former Holm textile factory, with a large area near the Mara pond. On 19th September 1944, over 40 boys, who were 17 years old at the time (b. 1927), and some younger - Uldis Mikelsons (1930), Roald Vitolins (19199), Vladislavs Kindzulis, Ivars Z.Rinkis and Rudolf B.Lacis (19178) were killed during the Soviet air raft. Forty-one killed were buried in Riga Brothers' graves.
On September 19, 1996, a monument was discovered in the greenery at Mara Pond. After the project of the Latvian architect Raimonds Slaidins, living in the USA, it was made by hewer Harry Sprincis. The 1.9 m high monument is made up of a dolomite-stacked support wall, which is covered by a gray boulder brought from Tukums. Its smooth plane features a cross and a Latvian national flag, in the background of which is the legionary symbol - three stars in the sign of the rising sun. The inscription:
"On September 19, 1944, the air force's assistants who were killed here and their combatants in known and unknown places of rest".
