Mersrags Lutheran Church
Mersrags Evangelical Lutheran Church; - located at Bakas St. 9. The church dates back to 16th century.
The chapel, built in the 18th century, resembled a large dwelling house. The first Lutheran church in Mersrags was built in 1591. Circa 1700, B. Strems, the leaseholder of the Engure iron foundry, built a wooden church with shingle roof; in 1743, the church was renovated and expanded, with the addition of a steeple. The current wooden building of the church was built in 1809, and it was completely reconstructed in 1896. Up until 1920, Mersrags church was a branch of the church of Engure, and the services were held by the pastor of Engure. The church organ was renovated in 1924. The building underwent complete restoration in 2000 – 2002. It is one of the oldest wooden churches in Latvia. A number of state-protected cultural monuments are situated in the church (J. F. Sartori altarpiece “Christ with child”, 1793, J. Pipars painting “Jesus saving drowning Peter”, a church organ from the second half of the 19th century, a chandelier from the late 19th century, and more).
