Lake Liepāja
Lake Liepāja (Latvian: Liepājas ezers) is the sixth largest lake in Latvia, located in southwestern Kurzeme within the territory of Liepāja city and Dienvidkurzeme Municipality. It is a shallow lagoon-type body of water separated from the Baltic Sea by a sandy strip of land. Water exchange between the lake and the sea occurs via the artificial Trade Canal (Tirdzniecības kanāls).
- Surface area: 37.15 km²
- Maximum length: 16.2 km
- Average depth: 2 m (maximum depth ~ 3 m)
- Islands: around 15 islands (largest: Zirgu Island, Attekas Island)
- Main tributaries: Bārta, Ālande, Otaņķe
The lake features extensive reed beds and low, marshy shores. Most of the lake bed is covered with a layer of silt. Lake Liepāja and its surrounding meadows form a nature reserve and a protected Natura 2000 territory, serving as a vital nesting and stopover site for migratory birds.
Visitors can explore the lake via boardwalk nature trails and birdwatching towers (such as those on Zirgu Island and at the end of Lauku Street). The lake is also a popular spot for angling and water recreation.
