Engure Breakwater
The Engure Breakwater is a historically significant coastal engineering structure forming part of Engure Harbour on the Gulf of Riga. Extending into the sea, the breakwater protects the harbour basin and entrance channel from wave action, storms, and coastal erosion.
The structure consists of large natural boulders reinforced with vertical wooden piles, many of which show visible weathering from prolonged exposure to saltwater, wind, and ice. This combination gives the breakwater a distinctive and authentic maritime character, reflecting its long-standing role in harbour protection.
Despite its age, the Engure breakwater continues to serve its original purpose while also functioning as a popular recreational spot for walking, fishing, and enjoying panoramic views of the sea and coastline. It represents an important element of Engure’s maritime heritage, illustrating traditional harbour construction methods and the village’s historical reliance on fishing and small-scale navigation.
