Dutch pygmy goats come from the Cameroon Valley in West Africa. In the 1950s in America, they were imported from European zoos to American zoos and research institutes. Originally, Dutch dwarf goats were used for meat and milk production. Today, goats are kept as pets not only in the countryside, but also in cities and suburbs. Dutch pygmy goats are very hardy and active, and can practically adapt to any living conditions. Goats usually weigh 24-34 kg, and males 27-39 kg. Their height ranges from 41 to 58 cm. The average lifespan of goats is 10 to 15 years. Body temperature 39.1 - 40 oC. Pulse 60-90 beats per minute. Goats reach maturity at the age of 10-12 weeks. Gestation period of goats 145-155 days. Female goats can give birth to 1-4 kids. The gestation period is 5 months. Babies start eating roughage, grains already at the age of one week. Recommended weaning age 8-10 weeks. In terms of color, goats can be light, medium or dark caramel, burgundy, light, medium and dark grey, black and brown. The goats' menu consists of various greens and grains. Fresh drinking water must be provided continuously. Goats like to have something in their pen to jump on. Goats need a barn and a lawn. Care must be taken to protect the goats from predators. Goats can also be trained, but it is very labor intensive. Goats are affectionate when treated with respect.
