Cat Sculptures in Marijampolė

History and Legend

The connection between Marijampolė and cats dates back to the 18th century, when Countess Pranciška Ščiukaitė-Butlerienė founded the settlement. According to local lore, the countess was deeply fond of cats, turning them into an unofficial symbol of the city. In honor of this heritage, various cat sculptures and public art installations have been created throughout the city.

The most famous ensemble is located in Countess Butlerienė's Courtyard (P. Butlerienės kiemelis), featuring three bronze cats playing on a water pipe. Additional metal and bronze cat sculptures are placed across the city, including along Kauno Street, public squares, and near landmark buildings. Each sculpture has a distinct artistic style, ranging from minimalist iron silhouettes to realistic bronze figures.

Current Function and Traditions

The cat sculptures have become one of Marijampolė's key tourist attractions and popular photo spots. A local tradition suggests that rubbing the whiskers or back of the sculptures brings good luck and fulfills wishes.
