Šešupė

Šešupė (Polish: Szeszupa, Russian: Шешупе) is a river in Eastern Europe flowing through Poland, Lithuania, and Russia (Kaliningrad Oblast). It is one of the primary left-bank tributaries of the Neman (Nemunas) River, with a total length of 298 kilometers—over half of which (around 158 km) lies within Lithuania.

Brief History

The Šešupė basin is the historical heartland of the Suvalkija (Sūduva) region. In the Middle Ages, the river acted as a natural landmark and trade route among Baltic tribes, later defining territorial borders between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Teutonic Order. Today, stretches of the river still mark the international border between Lithuania and Russia.

Geographical Features

• Source: Rises in northeastern Poland, near the town of Suwałki.

• Course: Flows north through Lithuania (passing through Kalvarija, Marijampolė, and Kudirkos Naumiestis) before turning west into the Kaliningrad Oblast.

• Mouth: Empties into the Neman River in a low-lying plain area.
